Are X-rays Safe During Pregnancy?
Dental X-rays are extremely safe, emitting one of the lowest amounts of radiation—comparable to that of a short airplane flight. But what if you’re expecting? Is it safe to get an X-ray while pregnant?
No single X-ray produces enough radiation exposure to harm a developing fetus, according to the American College of Radiology. And, receiving an X-ray during pregnancy is safe during all three trimesters. Your dentist or hygienist will cover you with a leaded apron that minimizes exposure to the abdomen. They will also cover your throat with the leaded collar to protect your thyroid from radiation.
It’s important to make a trip to your dentist during pregnancy, as lingering dental infections can harm not only your health, but also your baby’s. To avoid the risk of spreading infections to your body, make sure to get treatment for cavities and any other emergency dental work. Elective dental treatments should be performed during the second trimester of pregnancy, according to the American Pregnancy Association.
X-rays and fillings are safe, but what isn’t? Cosmetic dental work, such as teeth whitening, should be avoided during pregnancy.
Remember, the best way to have a healthy smile during pregnancy is to practice good oral health habits.
