A Coordination of Benefits Example: How COB Can Save You Money

If you and your partner both have insurance plans, you may be able to coordinate your benefits. Learn more about COB, how it could benefit you with our coordination of benefits example:
What is COB?
Coordination of benefits (COB) is when you have more than one dental benefits plan, and the two plans work together to help pay for more of your dental expenses. Through COB, you will have a primary plan and a secondary plan. Your primary plan will pay claims first, and your secondary plan will pay towards the remaining costs.
How Does COB Save Me Money?
COB saves you money by lowering out-of-pocket costs for dental care. This is because you have two plans covering your care. Before you waive your second dental plan, consider coordinating the two.
Coordination of Benefits Example
Let’s say you go to the dentist for a filling and the bill comes to $200, and your primary dental plan covers 80%. This means $40 is left to be covered on the bill. Since you have two plans, the rest of the bill can be sent to the second plan to be paid. If you didn’t have two plans, you would be responsible for the $40.
